DERON WILLIAMS TRADED TO THE NEW JERSEY NETS

On Monday the Knicks snatched Carmelo Anthony in a major trade, frustrating the Nets, who had spent months pursuing him. But before Anthony could slip on his Knicks jersey, the Nets answered in kind, and boldly.

In a deal that shocked the league, the Nets obtained Deron Williams, one of the game’s best point guards, from the Utah Jazz. The trade is a tremendous boost for the Nets, who badly needed a franchise star to build around as they prepare to move to Brooklyn for the 2012-13 season.

“I’m excited because Deron Williams I feel is the best point guard in the N.B.A.,” said Billy King, the Nets’ general manager. “And when you want to try to win, you need a point guard and a center. I think we have two of the best.”

The deal presents a risk because Williams has the ability to terminate his contract after next season. But Nets officials seem confident he will stay and spearhead the franchise’s move to Brooklyn.

“I don’t look at it as a risk,” King said. “We could sign him to an extension this summer. We know it. He knows it.”

In exchange for Williams, 26, the Nets are sending Derrick Favors, Devin Harris and two first-round picks to Utah, a package similar to what the Nets had offered Denver for Anthony. The Jazz will receive the Nets’ 2011 pick and Golden State’s 2012 pick.

Mikhail D. Prokhorov, the Nets’ billionaire owner, gleefully boasted last weekend that he drove up the price on Anthony. The Knicks won the bidding war but had to part with four key players and three draft picks.

The Nets have a long way to go, but Prokhorov might have the last laugh. Williams is a fantastic scorer and playmaker and a solid defender who led Utah to the playoffs the last four years, including a trip to the Western Conference finals in 2007.

Williams has been among the top three in assists per game for the last five seasons and is considered, along with Chris Paul, to be one of the league’s best point guards. He is averaging 21.3 points, a career high, and 9.7 assists this season.

The deal came together quickly, starting with a conversation between King and Kevin O’Connor, the Jazz general manager, on Tuesday, according to King. Twenty-four hours later, it was done.

“He’s definitely not a Plan B,” Coach Avery Johnson said. “He’s a Plan A also.”

Johnson lauded Williams’s presence, saying, “There’s a fear factor when you play against those guys.” He added, “We felt we needed to get somebody that gives us that.”

The trade comes two weeks after Utah’s legendary coach, Jerry Sloan, retired amid reports of a rift with Williams. Although Williams has voiced his discontent at times with Utah’s direction, there was no hint that the Jazz was about to trade him.

The N.B.A.’s trading deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m., Eastern time. Williams is expected to make his Nets debut Friday, when New Jersey opens a two-game trip in San Antonio.

Williams’s potential free agency in 2012 could become a stress point for the Nets, and an opportunity for the Knicks, who already had Williams as a target. Williams is not eligible for a contract extension until July — after the current collective bargaining agreement expires — so the Nets cannot immediately lock him up, as the Knicks did with Anthony.

But the new labor deal could make it easier to keep Williams, if it includes a franchise tag or new financial incentives for free agents to stay with their teams. Both concepts have been discussed.

If, as expected, the new labor deal is more restrictive, it could also motivate Williams not to opt out of his contract. He is due to earn $17.8 million in 2012-13.

The Knicks (28-26) have two stars — Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire — and a clear path to the playoffs this spring. The Nets (17-40) have much more work to do, but Williams will accelerate their progress.

By the time the Nets are ready to move to Brooklyn, the city’s two franchises could be battling for the next elite player. Dwight Howard can become a free agent in 2012.

Prokhorov, according to King, was ecstatic with the Williams acquisition, and presumably pleased to steal some of the Knicks’ thunder.

“Can’t worry about their thunder,” King said.

CARMELO ANTHONY TRADED TO THE NEW YORK KNICKS

The Carmelo Anthony saga came to an end Monday night, with James Dolan finally getting his man.

In a blockbuster deal months in the making, Anthony became a Knick Monday night and will make his Garden debut Wednesday night against the Bucks.

The trade - which involved nine players - completely overhauled the Knicks' roster, but left them with two superstars in Amare' Stoudemire and Anthony, who punched his ticket out of Denver at the start of the sesaon when he refused to sign an extension.

A source said the deal was completed when Dolan, the Garden chairman, gave in and included 7-foot Russian center Timofey Mozgov in the deal. According to a report, heading to Denver with Mozgov are Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler and draft picks.

The Knicks, in addition to Anthony, are set to get Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and former Knick Renaldo Balkman.

Incredibly, there were deals all throughout the NBA that were being held up essentially because of Mozgov. When informed yesterday that he might be the most important player in the NBA as of this moment, Mozgov replied, "Thank you.

"You told me this," he added. "I didn't know that. I will know this. It's great. But I don't feel nothing about it."

There are reports that the Nuggets, after making any deal with the Knicks, could send Mozgov, along with another player, to the Nets for first-round picks. That would unite Mozgov with fellow Russian Mikhail Prokhorov, who owns the Nets.

While Prokhorov could end up with the two Knicks, Dolan won the border war, not only landing Anthony but keeping him out of New Jersey.

"This is Jim and the Russian and Jim does not want to lose to Prokhorov, which is why I think the Knicks will overpay for Carmelo," one league official said before the trade was completed. "It looks like they are both willing to overpay for him."

The Nets had a nine-player deal in place that required Anthony to agree to a three-year, $65 million extension. Yahoo! Sports reported yesterday that Denver coach George Karl favored the Knicks deal. However, it has been widely reported that team president Donnie Walsh and coach Mike D'Antoni are against gutting their roster to acquire Anthony.

The Daily News reported that former Knicks president Isiah Thomas is advising Dolan and was pushing him to include Mozgov in the trade. On Sunday, the Garden took an unprecedented step of releasing a joint statement from Dolan, Walsh and D'Antoni that said the three were working on the deal without any involvement from an outside party.

The statement did not mention Thomas by name and it also didn't answer the most obvious question: If Dolan, Walsh and D'Antoni are all on the same page, why have negotiations with Denver advanced to this point with the team president and coach against the deal?

When D'Antoni was asked after yesterday's practice in Greenburgh if he is in favor of trading three starters, he replied: "That's - you know, I'm not going there. There's no use in me answering stuff like that. Because we could sit here and debate all day but I'm not going to do it. It's not worth it."

Anthony missed Nuggets practice yesterday to make an appearance on Conan O'Brien's late-night show.

Had the trade not been completed before noon Tuesday, the Knicks would have all be together for the first time since last week, when Amar'e Stoudemire was quoted as saying he was in favor of a deal. Stoudemire, who started in Sunday's All-Star Game, was excused from yesterday's practice.

Curry was also excused due to travel problems but the other players mentioned were in attendance. Felton, who is said to be upset over possibly being moved, did not comment. Nor did Chandler. Gallinari, who not long ago was viewed as being a big part of the Knicks' future, addressed his status and admitted he'd prefer to stay.

"To be honest with you, it's tough to leave New York," he said. "It's tough. But it's a part of the NBA life and it's a part of how the NBA works. You've got to live with that."

CARMELO CLOSE TO A TRADE TO THE KNICKS

The Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks are discussing a three-team trade that would make forward Carmelo Anthony a Knick before the Feb. 24 trade deadline, according to league sources.

In the proposed trade, New York would send Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to Minnesota and the Timberwolves would send Corey Brewer and a first-round pick to Denver. Denver would also receive Wilson Chandler from New York.

However, a Timberwolves source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher on Sunday that the team would not approve of the described deal to send Brewer and a first-rounder to Denver for New York's Randolph and Curry.

While these are the names currently being discussed, additional players could be added.

The deal is not expected to happen until the middle of next week at the earliest, and one source said it could drag out until the trade deadline. Denver, which has been exchanging proposals with the Knicks for the past couple weeks, is weighing other options.

With teams aware of Anthony's desire to play in New York, the Nuggets' choices are limited. With little chance of signing Anthony long-term, few clubs are willing to send valuable assets to Denver.

If the trade with New York and Minnesota goes through, Anthony would be in line to receive a three-year, $65 million contract extension as part of the agreement in what is known as an extend-and-trade.

Since Anthony's preference to play for New York is known, there is some sentiment within the Knicks organization to hold off on trading for him and wait until he becomes a free agent this summer. Such a move would enable them to keep their young assets.

But owner James Dolan has been pressing team president Donnie Walsh to trade for Anthony before the deadline, according to sources.

"Dolan is really pressuring Walsh to get Melo, but Denver has been vacillating back and forth," one of the sources said.

A trade to New York would end the season-long saga that began last summer when Anthony refused to sign the contract extension with the Nuggets.

Late in the preseason, reports of a potential four-team deal with New Jersey, Utah and Charlotte that would make Anthony a Net surfaced.

But league sources say the deal was overblown and New Jersey was actually leaking the story in an effort to pressure Denver's new front office regime of Josh Kroenke and Masai Ujiri into making a deal.

Last month, reports of another potential trade of Anthony to New Jersey surfaced, this time involving the Detroit Pistons. That deal was close to being agreed upon, but Anthony was reluctant to sign the three-year, $65 million extension with New Jersey.

Anthony agreed to meet with the Nets but owner Mikhail Prokhorov called off his club's pursuit of Anthony in a news conference a day before the scheduled sit-down was to take place.

There have been no talks between New Jersey and Denver since Prokhorov pulled out of the deal, but the Nets are monitoring the Nuggets' discussions with other teams. The possibility of New Jersey reigniting talks with the Nuggets remains until the Nets trade away Troy Murphy, who's expiring contract is critical to any deal between the two clubs.

BREAKING NEWS: FUNKMASTER FLEX ARRESTED EARLIER TODAY

Funkmaster Flex Arrested For Allegedly Shoving A Woman!!!

Well here’s a story you may not see on inflexwetrust.com. The NYC car enthusiast and HOT 97 DJ was arrested for allegedly shoving a woman!

According to TMZ, Flex born Aston Taylor, was arrested in New York today after a woman told police Flex pushed her, tried to break her phone, and then sent her threatening messages. Law Enforcement told the website that cops responded to a domestic violence call from a 40-year-old woman in her home of Westchester early this morning.

When authorities arrived, Flex wasn’t there but the woman claims he went ballistic on her and left. Cops managed to locate Flex a short time later — and arrested him on charges of harassment, aggravated harassment and criminal mischief.

Flex was arraigned in Greenburgh Town Court a few hours ago and was released on $500 bail … but he’s been ordered to stay away from his accuser — pending a hearing later this month.

Flex (no stranger to controversy) came under fire recently for his comments about Tupac Shakur and recently was criticized by former Rocafella videographer “Choke” for wanting total control over the Tunnel documentary. There was no story today on his “highly praised” blog site other than his mug shot and a quote which read:

“Man I never thought I’d be posting this” -Funk Flex
